The Rye High School wrestling team got a jump on the other RHS sports by attending the Colt Bobby Hawk Classic at Pueblo West last Saturday. Rocky Ford scored 223.5 points in winning the team championship in the 17-team tournament. Rye finished 11th with 59 points and came home with a pair of silver medals.

Michael Atencio at 120 lbs. and Cole Miller at 126 lbs. both lost their final match of the day to bring home a silver instead of a gold. In Atencio’s case the championship was a battle of defending state champions when he faced Isaiah Gomez, the undefeated 3A state champion from LaJunta.

Gomez downed Atencio 7-1 after Atencio had a bye and a pair of first period falls to journey to the finals.

Miller won three consecutive falls in the 126 lb. class before dropping the championship match 5-0 against Levi Deaguero, Adams City.

Riley Prichard missed weight for the 113 lb. weight class but came in 4th place at 120 lbs. After losing his first match by a fall, Prichard won three falls in a row, then won a 7-5 decision, before losing by a forfeit and winning a no contest decision over Tyler Valdez of Falcon for 4th place.
