Wrestlers Finish Third in Gunnison

Two first place finishes combined with a second place and a pair of third place finishes powered the Rye High School wrestling team to a third-place finish at the Gunnison Cowboy Invitational Wrestling Tournament last Saturday.

Mead won the tournament held at the Western State Field House. In fact, in addition to the high school matches a college tournament was doing on at the same time giving the Thunderbolts an opportunity to watch college matches when not watching their own.

Cole Miller at 126 lbs. moved his record to 22-2 will a Gold medal finish. Miller pinned all five of his opponents including Wyatt Gardner of Mountain Valley in the finals 23 seconds into the second period.

At 120 lbs. Michael Atencio also pinned all five opponents to win the gold. Atencio defeated Robert Cochran of Hotchkiss will a fall 36 seconds into the final stanza.

Riley Prichard, in his first tournament at 113 lbs. came in second place. Prichard recorded four consecutive falls in his favor. He then lost a fall in the finals to Roman Salaz of team champion Mead.
