In an on again off again football season the Colorado State High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) has reversed itself and decided high school football will take place this fall.

So today (Thursday) the Rye High School Thunderbolts will return to the football field to begin an abbreviated season. Gone are the scrimmages to tune up for the year with the first game taking place the weekend of October 9. Yes, that’s right about two weeks from the first practice until the first game.

The six-game regular season schedule will start with a visit to Paonia although game day and time has not been established as of yet. After the completion of the six regular season games teams will compete in a “bowl game” or be part of the playoffs.

The regular season ends on October 13 or 14.

Head Coach Connor Pigg will be assisted by Mike Schauer, offensive coordinator; Jason Gillette, Offensive and Defensive line; Gino Maestas, wide receivers; Nick Highberger, running backs and defensive backs; and Gunny Pagnotta, scout.

Pigg is projecting 30-35 participants but won’t know until the first practice.

Temperatures will be taken when entering practice or a game and masks are required for all participants who are not actively in the game.

Although the dates are not complete after Paonia the Thunderbolts will face Peyton and Colorado Springs Christian School at home, followed by a road game to Florence. The final home game will be against Trinidad and the regular season will end on the road at Rocky Ford.
