Charles was born in Fowler in 1936, the only child of Carrol Webster and Estella Lindsey Hogue.

William ‘Henry’ Edward Davis Described as “one of the most comfortable properties on the Apache” Henry and Louisa Biffen or Bitten Davis had resided in the area since 1873, and had a “fine herd of cattle”. They also raised horses. Henry and Louisa were both born in England; married there in 1858; and had three children: Henry Percy, Maude Louise May and Isabel.

Two days after the militia was ordered up, two men named Fredrick Lehman and Sol Seyga were ambushed and killed three miles northeast of Fairplay on the west side of Red Hill. The two men were traveling together on the road to Denver when the attack occurred. One of the victims was killed by a single gunshot, while the other suffered a gunshot through a wrist before his head was bashed in with a rock.”

Life was not much better in San Rafael. Felipe made adobe bricks while the other family members farmed the land. It wasn’t enough, driven by poverty, Felipe and his brother, Jose Vivian robbed a freight wagon belonging to a priest from Galisteo, New Mexico in early 1863. The wagon was driven by a teamster from the Conejos area named Juan Flugencio Gonzales. “The Espinosas took what they wanted and then tied the Mexican teamster in a knot and swung him to a staple on the end of the wagon tongue and started the team. After a time a traveler stopped the team and untied the teamster.”

LOCAL HISTORICAL LORE The Watson George Moody Family In the spring of 1906, Watson George Moody arrived at Idylwild, the new tuberculosis center in Rye, from Boston, Massachusetts on the stage from Graneros Station. His doctors recommended a dryer climate for his health and he decided to try the newer treatment methods at Idylwild.
