Veterans Give Memorial Day Presentation at RHS

Three Members of the LTC Fred Ettleman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7305 took the time to visit Rye High School (RHS) on Tuesday, May 7, to explain to the students the significance of Memorial Day. Sr. Vice Commander Jerry Collins, Chaplain Don Shumake, and Quartermaster Tom Howard were proud to explain the holiday to the students as well as presenting two patriotic videos and talking about their military experience. They also explained the significance of the Memorial Poppy and handed them out to the students after the presentation.

Small Fire at Rye Elementary Results in Evacuation A small fire at Rye Elementary resulted in a short evacuation and some cleanup, but had little other effect. Rye Fire Protection District Fire Chief Steve Bennett reported the call came in to them at 10:12 a.m.

The Sangre de Cristo Volunteers for Community (VFC) held one of its fabulous yard sales on Saturday, May 11. The yard sales are more accurately basement sales at the Susan Kalman Community Center, so inclement weather doesn’t interfere with the sale.

Lion Donna Walker-Hulben On a recent trip to the Veterans Community Living Center in Walsenburg, CO, a Veteran recognized our Lions by the bright yellow vests we wear and proceeded to tell us a very heartwarming story. The Lions helped her to obtain surgery and replaced her right eyelid and parts of her eye enabling her to see again – all at no cost to her! This amazing story not only brought good feelings to our group but also reminded us that we are “Knights for the Blind”.

Sheriff Lucero Continues to Look for Clarity in Late Session Law

Pueblo County Sheriff David Lucero and his staff are crafting a response to a Department of Labor complaint claiming unfair labor practice against him for his refusal to bargain with them after the state legislature passed a bill last year expanding collective bargaining rights for county workers. Lucero asked for and was granted an extension to the mid-May deadline, because, for one thing, he feels he is responding not just for himself but for sheriffs throughout Colorado.
