The Greenhorn Valley Book Club gathered on Thursday, October 26, at the Greenhorn Library to discuss the novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures.

The lighthearted, detailed, and fun book brought out a lightness in the group, as well, as they discussed the characters and detailed plot. There was frequent laughter as the readers expressed their opinions of the main characters, including the communicating octopus, Marcellus.

The author’s ability to create likable, realistic characters was one of the reader's favorite points of the book. Readers found the book hard to put down, wanting to know more about the characters and what was happening to them. Remarkably Bright Creatures is an exploration of friendship, reckoning, and hope as the characters search to find peace and learn about themselves.

Several members had read the book more than once, including one person who said they had read it about a year ago and it was in their top ten books of all time.

Most of the readers commented on the author’s eye for detail as she wove an intricate tapestry of characters' lives but followed through down to the smallest detail, even including the main character's cat's new life.

Shelby Van Pelt, the author of Remarkably Bright Creatures, was selected as one of the authors to be presented in the Pueblo City-County Library Districts All Pueblo Reads Program. There was a Public Author Presentation and Book Signing featuring Shelby Van Pelt at Rawlings Library: Ryals Grand Event Space on the 4th floor on October 28, at 11:00 a.m.

Greenhorn Valley Book Club host Linda Lewis reserved a table for the book club to attend and meet Van Pelt.

All Pueblo Reads is a literary project designed to get everyone in Pueblo County to read and discuss one book at the same time.

The Booklovers Ball, also part of the All Pueblo Reads Program, was held on October 27, at 6:30 p.m. at Rawlings Library and was highlighted by an author talk and book signing featuring Shelby Van Pelt. This is a popular fundraiser event for the Pueblo Library Foundation.
