Susan Kalman returned to visit Colorado City last week and was greeted with a potluck breakfast at the Susan Kalman Peaks to Prairie Community Center.

Approximately 30 Sangre de Cristo Volunteers for Community (VFC) members and well-wishers turned out to greet Susan who cheerfully and graciously made time to personally speak with each person in attendance.

The thoughtful event was organized by VFC’s current President, Judi Patrick, when she learned that Kalman would be in town but only for a short time.

Patrick thought this event would give everyone a chance to visit with Kalman as well as let her meet the new VFC board members.

The VFC was founded in 2009 and was formerly known as Volunteers for Change, with the name change in 2015 to more accurately reflect the organization’s projects. Before moving to California last year, Kalman was a driving force of the VFC in their goal to enrich lives and celebrate nature in southern Colorado.

Kalman was instrumental in obtaining the old West Course golf clubhouse in Colorado City in 2018, with the purpose of creating a community center. The beautifully rehabbed building now bears the title of the Susan Kalman Peaks to Prairie Community Center. The center is serving the community well as a popular venue for weddings and parties as well as community dinners, and life-expanding classes.

Kalman says she misses her friends in the Greenhorn Valley but is happy where she relocated to on the outskirts of Napa, CA. She shared that she mostly uses a wheelchair due to balance issues but is quite active in her new community as well as keeping up with the VFC activities and attending their meetings via Zoom.

The Sangre de Cristo Volunteers for Community held their first annual bake sale and crafts fair on Saturday, November 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Twenty vendors participated in the show at the Susan Kalman Peaks to Prairie Community Center, offering a wide variety of handmade products.
