Ethan Beeman, Rye High School FFA Advisor and Ag Teacher, presented a request for a trip to be approved by the Pueblo County School District 70 Board of Education (BOE) on December 5. Beeman shared that he had one student, Katelyn Huskins, who had won a chance to participate in a trip to the Society of Range Management Youth Forum which is being held in Sparks, Nevada. Beeman said that, in addition to being the RHS FFA chapter president, Huskins won the highest individual overall award in the district plant identification and range judging contest. She also won second in the state range management contest and also has the highest score in the vet science category.

As a result of her high standings, Huskins's admission to the youth forum is paid for by the Society of Range Management of Colorado; and the RHS FFA chapter would only have to pay for her airfare and Beeman’s trip.

They plan to leave Colorado on January 28 and return on February 1. Beeman assured the board that there were ample funds for the trip and that female chaperones would be available.

Huskins is one of only three Colorado youths to win the honor of attending the forum.

In further RHS FFA news, during the BOE meeting Bond Manager Ted Ortiviz said that the RHS shop addition is progressing. They are waiting for a rooftop unit that needs to be installed while the project is still on the ground to arrive. The drywall is ready to be put up. Ortiviz estimates an early February date to obtain the certificate of occupation for the new building.

Superintendent Ronda Rein requested Martin Luther King Day, January 15, 2024, off for the RHS, Pueblo County High and Pueblo West High students so that the staff could attend mental health first aid training. The purpose of the training is to help staff identify students in a crisis. The BOE approved Rein’s request.

In light of only one candidate for each position running for election to the D70 BOE, the election was canceled and the board approved Board Member Appointee Dr. Aaron (AJ) Wilson to fill the Director of District I Vacancy and approved Board Member Appointee Anne Ochs to fill the Director of District II.

Ochs was re-elected as the President of the District 70 Board of Education, and Dr. AJ Wilson was re-elected Vice President of the District 70 Board of Education.

Kimberly Rein was selected as Secretary/Treasurer of the District 70 Board of Education.

The next D70 BOE Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at the Educational Services Center located at 24951 East Highway 50, Pueblo, Colorado, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
