Silver Heart, Purple Heart, and Vietnam Marine Service Medal recipient Stan Abel was presented with a Valor Quilt by the Colorado City Scrappy Ladies Quilt Guild. Abel was a Marine in Vietnam.

Abel shared his Marine career experiences. After his enlistment he went to boot camp in California followed by training in North Carolina. Abel shared that he and his wife got married before he was deployed to Vietnam.

While in combat, Abel was shot and lost the use of his leg. He shared about his hospitalization and recovery in a California Naval Hospital, where he was awarded his medals.

Abel talked about how hard it was in the service to leave fallen Marines behind on the battlefield. And, he stated that military wives never receive enough credit for their part in the military service of their country.

Abel served as the game warden in Rye for 30 years.

Nancy Shaw, Deb Berringer and Rosemary Holland presented the quilt to Abel. The handmade quilt pieces were cut by Bellinger and designed by Leslie Miller.

The October 26th presentation is one of the small ways the guild expresses their thanks for military members and family who serve the community and country.

Scrappy Ladies meet the second Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the Colorado City Community Building, 5000 Cuerno Verde Blvd., Colorado City.
