The Rye High School boys basketball team dropped a pair of close games last week to finish out the regular season with a 127 record overall and a 7-6 league record, good for a three-way tie for 6th in the 15-team league. In addition, they will have completed a key post season game against Buena Vista on Wednesday.

On Monday the 12th Rye traveled to Peyton and lost a 54-46 decision. Brendan Gray scored 16 points, had five rebounds, three assists, three steals and blocked three shots. Codah Graber had five rebounds, five assists, four steals, and two blocked shots.

Eli Guzman scored 14 points and had five rebounds. Jay Graham had nine rebounds.

Rye shot 37% from the field and 53% from the free throw line.

Rye led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Peyton was up 25-22 at halftime and then extended their lead to 38-30 at the end of three quarters.

Two days later Rye hosted Banning Lewis Academy at the Thunderdome and dropped a hard-fought game 42-39.

Graham scored 12 points, four steals, and one block. Isaiah Guzman scored 19 points and blocked a shot.

Graber had five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Eli Guzman had nine rebounds and a pair of assists and Nolan Schauer had two assists also.

Rye shot 32% from the field and 40% from the line.

“3A is weird,” commented Head Coach Lane Sherwood. “We will play our district tournament out regardless of wins or losses on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. RPI runs through that tournament, then after districts the winners of each district hosts a regional tournament with the top 32 seeds getting sent to those sites for four team bracket play. With us sitting at 20 right now we should be playing in regionals next weekend, but winning this weekend gives us a host spot.”

Rye and Buena Vista go into the playoff game with identical 12-7 records. They met on January 3rd and Rye won by 10 points. See next weeks View for the details of the game.
