Rye High School Hosts Invitational Track Meet

The Rye High School track team claimed eight medals at their own invitational when they hosted 25 teams on Friday the 19th.

Isaiah Guzman claimed the gold medal with a triple jump of 42’ 10” to win the only individual gold of the day. Guzman also placed 4th in the long jump with a wind aided leap of 19’5”. He was joined on the top rung of the podium by the girls 4x800 relay team, composed of Ming Tam, Ozzira Garrison, Kayla Himmelberg, and Adriel Snyder, who won their event in a season best time of 12:07.83.

The boys 4x800 relay team was the only silver medal for the host squad of the day, when Mason Ford, Justin Siudyla, Hyrum Peterson, and David Maroney, ran a season best time of 9:43.07 in that event.

For the girl’s team, Hailey George had a banner day. George won the bronze in both the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. In the 100 meter she had a season best time of 17.53 seconds. In the 300meter hurdles she ran 53.09 to grab that medal.

George also placed 5th in the 200-meter run, which she completed in a season best 28.43 seconds. She was also 8th in the long jump with a leap of 14’3.75”. The final two bronze for the girls’ team were won by Jaklyn Newitt in the discus where she heaved the disc 94’11”, and in the shot put, where she threw 31’5”.

Kendall Himmelberg won a bronze medal in the triple jump with a jump of 32’0.75”.

The only bronze medalist for the boys’ team was David Maroney, who grabbed his medal in the 1600-meter run. Maroney ran the event in 5:06.04. Maroney also placed 4th in the 3200meter run, which he completed in 11:05.85.

The boys 4x200 relay team also placed 4th running the event in a season best time of 1:50.77. Enoch Farney, Adin Poehlein, Colton Hendricksen, and Nathan Santini ran the four legs.

Emmyle Varner placed 6th in the discus with a throw of 87’1”.

The boys’ 4x400 relay team placed 7th with a time of 3:59.26. Ford, Josh George, Derick Bak, and Isaiah Guzman ran the four legs. The girls’ 4x100 relay team also placed 7th in a season best time of 1:01.20. The legs were run by Sofia Crosson, Aisha Farney, Garrison and Himmelberg.

The 800-meter sprint medley relay team also placed 7th in a season best time of 12:07.83. Crosson, Farney, Hutcheson, and Frazier, ran those four legs.

Madison Heasley threw the discus 82’6” which was good for 7th place in that event.

Rylan Baker placed 8th in the 400-meter dash. Baker’s time of 59.42 seconds was a season best mark for him. Derick Bak also had a season best mark that won him 8th place. That was in the shot put where he threw 36’4”. The last Thunderbolt to finish in the top ten was Hyrum Peterson who placed 1oth in the 110meter hurdles with he ran in a time of 22.75 seconds.

Girls’ Head Track Coach Catherine Gallegos saw the 6th place finish for both the boys’ and girls’ team as filled with good performances. “We had another successful meet,” shared Gallegos. “We had 19 personal records and Isaiah Guzman in the triple jump and the girls’ 4x800 meter relay team were the best in their event of the 25 teams who attended.”

Gallegos indicated that three Thunderbolts currently would qualify for state: Guzman is ranked third in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump. Kendall Himmelberg is ranked fifth in the triple jump and Hailey George is ranked ninth in the 100-meter hurdles and 11th in the 300-meter hurdles.

Rye’s next action will be in the Rocky Ford Invitational on April 26.
